All-electric Genesis GV60 Confirmed, Debut Set for This Year

UPDATE (02/17/2020): Genesis Motor North America's PR manager Jarred Pellat reached out to us and insisted the GV60 is anything but confirmed. Plans may still change between now and the official reveal. Below is the original story.

The Korean automakers will unveil a beautiful trio of electric crossovers later this year. After the Hyundai IONIQ 5 (February 23) and Kia’s yet-unnamed model (early March), we’ll see the first electrified member of the Genesis family—the GV60.

Of course, we already knew the brand was working on an EV (multiple EVs, in fact), but the name, timing and other details had not been confirmed yet.

Peter Lanzavecchia, chairman of the U.S. Genesis National Dealer Advisory Council, broke the news following a virtual NADA meeting last week.

The launch of the GV60 will take place by the end of 2021.

Beyond a few spy shots circulating online, there are no official images of the vehicle. It will be a small crossover slotting below the GV70, the latter going on sale in Canada in the second half of 2021. Incidentally, an electric variant of the GV70 is also expected to come at some point.

Obviously, technical details such as output and range remain unspecified, but we know that the GV60 will ride on the new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that was unveiled by Hyundai-Kia in December, as shown above. It’s projected to deliver more than 500 kilometres according to the WLTP standard used for most markets, which would mean over 400 kilometres in Canada.

A direct rival of the Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-PACE and Tesla Model Y, not to mention the upcoming BMW iX, the Genesis GV60 will likely enjoy a decent amount of success—at least more than a production version of the Mint coupe concept revealed in 2019. Pricing should be extremely competitive, as well.

At the other end of the lineup, dealers were told by top Hyundai and Genesis executives that a full-size SUV (GV90?) is not part of the plan right now.
