Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept Hints at Sportier Midsize SUV

Genesis unveiled the GV80 Coupe Concept during an exclusive event at Genesis House New York on Monday night, showing us the Korean luxury brand’s take on the coupe-like SUV genre.

Featuring bright orange paint called Magma, the vehicle retains most of the design cues that set Genesis apart including the G-Matrix crest grille as well as the quad lamps up front.

A difference with the standard GV80 is the continuation of the front lamps into the fenders, along with illuminated "Designed by Genesis" plaques at the bottom of said fenders.

In the rear, the GV80 Coupe Concept’s optimized aerodynamic fluidity is complemented by an upper rear spoiler and spoiler lip on the elliptical concave ducktail. Meanwhile, the dual tail lamps are full-width units that wrap around the corners and extend into the rear fenders.

The size of the new five-spoke forged aluminum wheels isn’t specified, but it probably is 22-23 inches considering how small the brake callipers look.

The interior of the GV80 Coupe Concept contrasts black Nappa and suede leather with plaid double stitching, orange piping and carbon fibres weaves on the functional surfaces.

The three-spoke steering wheel plays an important role in emphasizing the sportiness of the vehicle, just like the four bucket seats that provide increased body support during cornering. And get this: the structural stiffness of the body is reinforced with a strut brace behind the rear seats.

While we don’t expect that last item to make it to production on a Genesis model, we’ve been told the GV80 Coupe Concept serves as a preview of the company’s future programs. Will Genesis actually go forward with a coupe variant of the GV80? Maybe. Could we see a Genesis equivalent of the freshly unveiled Kia EV9 three-row electric SUV? That would be great.
