2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE Adds Style, Muscle and Cool Tech
The Mercedes-Benz GLE is getting a proper mid-cycle update for the 2024 model year. Remember, it’s one of the most popular midsize luxury SUVs in Canada.
Just as we suspected when we caught slightly camouflaged pre-production models on the roads of Austria earlier this winter, the exterior changes are pretty subtle. The bumpers, front grille, air intakes, headlights and taillights have a new look, but you have to pay attention to appreciate the difference. Two new body colours can be specified (sodalite blue metallic and MANUFAKTUR alpine grey solid), while the refreshed wheel designs range from 20-22 inches in size. The ambient lighting with animated projection of the Mercedes-Benz logo is available as a new optional extra.

The AMG models evolve in similar fashion and will continue to please customers looking for a sportier appearance. They now wear an AMG badge at the tip of the hood instead of the Mercedes star, something we’ll see on all future AMG vehicles.
High-Class Interior
Inside, the updated cabin is inspired by the very opulent Mercedes-Maybach GLS as well as the S-Class sedan. Additional colour combinations are available, new metallic and piano black accents can be found throughout, and sensor surfaces on the horizontal spokes of the steering wheel allow the driver to operate the instrument panel and centre display (both 12.3 inches). Standard content is improved and includes a 590W Burmester audio system with Dolby Atmos.
With the second generation of the MBUX infotainment system, the GLE is now up to date and becomes even more digital and intelligent. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now available wirelessly. The voice assistant is more interactive and capable of learning by activating online services in the Mercedes me App. Moreover, certain actions like taking a phone call can be performed even without the activation keyword "Hey Mercedes."
Off-Road Mode not only displays key information such as gradient, roll angle, compass and steering angle, but it also offers the "transparent engine hood" function where the centre screen shows a virtual view under the front of the vehicle, including the front wheels and their steering position. This can be extremely helpful to better recognize obstacles off the beaten path. Meanwhile, unlike in the previous model, Active Steering Assist with lane centering now remains activated when towing.
Electrification Across the Line
Most 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE models now have more power or torque than before. All of them are mild hybrids featuring a 48V system and Integrated Starter Generator that combines the starter and alternator in one powerful electric motor, easing the burden on the gasoline engine while providing an extra 22 hp/148 lb-ft. of torque under acceleration.

- GLE 450 4MATIC: 3.0L six-cylinder, 375 hp, 369 lb-ft., 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds
- GLE 53 4MATIC+: 3.0L six-cylinder, 429 hp, 413 lb-ft., 0-100 km/h in 5 seconds
- GLE 63 S 4MATIC+: 4.0L V8 (twin-turbo), 603 hp, 627 lb-ft., 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds
Keep in mind that AMG models benefit from a fully variable all‑wheel drive system, nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT dual-clutch transmission and AMG RIDE CONTROL+ adaptive air suspension.
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE will soon enter production in Alabama and go on sale in Canada in late spring. Pricing will be announced closer to launch, but expect some notable hikes. The 2023 lineup starts at $75,800.
