Ford F-150 Lightning Confirmed, to Debut May 19

It turns out the rumours were true: the fully electric variant of the Ford F-150 will be called “Lightning.”

As many enthusiasts remember, the name was previously used for a street performance pickup created by Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT). It’s only fitting to revive it for an electric F-150, don’t you think?

The Blue Oval is calling this model its “smartest, most innovative truck yet,” bringing “stunning innovation, technologies and capabilities to the F-Series.” One of them, of course, will be the built-in generator available with the new F-150 Hybrid.

Here's the latest teaser:

“Every so often, a new vehicle comes along that disrupts the status quo and changes the game … Model T, Mustang, Prius, Model 3. Now comes the F-150 Lightning,” said Ford President and CEO Jim Farley. “F-150 Lightning can power your home during an outage; it’s even quicker than the original F-150 Lightning performance truck; and it will constantly improve through over-the-air updates.”

The official debut will take place at Ford’s headquarters on May 19 at 9:30 p.m. EDT. It will be broadcast live on multiple platforms as well as 18 major locations such as Times Square in New York City and Las Vegas Boulevard. As always, you can count on The Car Guide to bring you complete coverage.

Production of the all-new F-150 Lightning is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2022 at Ford’s Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan. As previously reported, the first deliveries will be made in the summer, though U.S. customers will likely have priority over Canadian customers.
