BMW Says No to the i8 M

Since the launch of the BMW i8, there have been quite a few rumors floating around about a (very) high-performance version developed by the engineers at the M division. It would have been named M8, and would have had a lot more power than the standard car.

However, in a recent press conference, M products manager, Cartsten Pries, and global BMW products manager, Friedrich Nitschke, denied that such a car was in the making.

On a more positive note, there may be another exciting project going on. According to some rumors, BMW is currently working on a genuine supercar, tracing its roots to the original M1. It is reported to have a twin-turbo V8 pumping out more than 650 HP. This car would have a big chance of being unveiled in 2016, when BMW will celebrate a century of operation.

Even if the M8 will not happen, a lot of technologies developed with the i program will be used in their regular vehicles, M or not. For example, we already know that the next 5 and 7 Series will be built with body panels made of carbon fiber, something BMW perfected with the i vehicles.
