Hello Summer: 1979 VW Super Beetle With Just 257 Km Could Be Yours

Summer is here, officially, and if you’re looking for a cool little cabriolet to make the most of the hot season, have we got a gem for you.

Posted on auction website Bring a Trailer, this 1979 Volkswagen Super Beetle convertible is offered at no reserve on dealer consignment in Woodbridge, Ontario and, incredibly, has logged just 257 km—or so says the odometer. One thing’s for sure, it looks almost immaculate.

For those who don’t know, 1979 marked the final year of sale for the Super Beetle in the North American market, and it was exclusively available as a convertible. This example was acquired by the current owner in 1998 and has reportedly remained in storage ever since. That’s 25 years without seeing the light of day.

The bright Lemon Yellow (LA1D) body contrasts with the manually operated black soft top and black vinyl interior upholstery. The car also features chrome-finished impact bumpers with rub strips, running boards, silver-finished 15-inch steel wheels and rear fender stone guards.

The rear-mounted, air-cooled, 1.6-litre flat-four engine boasts fuel injection. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. Other components worth pointing out include a MacPherson strut front suspension and drum brakes at all four corners—not really a problem since the Super Beetle was rated at only 48 horsepower and 75 lb-ft. of torque when new.

As for the interior, which sports burl wood trim on the dashboard and a four-spoke steering wheel with a Wolfsburg crest centre cap, it comes with a heater and defroster, plus a heated rear window. Everything is in superb condition except for the corrosion-plagued hand brake.

[UPDATE-06/26/2023] This 1979 Super Beetle ended up selling for $58,000 USD, the equivalent of $76,400 CAD approximately.
