GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX May Preview More Extreme Pickup

Is the GMC Canyon about to spawn an even more rugged and more off-road ready pickup than the AT4? Rumours and spy shots suggest that a model called Canyon AT4X is in the works and could debut along with the next generation, likely for the 2023 model year.

It would be kind of like what Chevrolet is doing with the Colorado, which is available in ZR2 and ZR2 Bison editions, the latter more extreme than the former.

For now, GMC has made no official announcements, but it might have given us a preview with the new AT4 OVRLANDX concept.

Designed as a no-limit overlanding vehicle, this one-off Canyon features a heavy-duty front bumper with winch, integrated front recovery points and brush guard, a factory-lifted, wide off-road chassis with enhanced underbody coverage, off-road rocker panel protectors, as well as a beefed-up suspension with Multimatic DSSV dampers and cast-iron control arms.

Under the flared fenders with task lamps are 17-inch wheels mounted on 33-inch BFGoodrich KM3 Mud-Terrain tires. The result is a ground clearance of 10 inches (25.4 cm), approach angle of 27.7 degrees and water fording height of 32.1 inches (81.5 cm), helped by a custom-tailored snorkel.

Power to explore rugged terrain is provided by GMC’s 3.6-litre V6 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and front and rear electronic locking differentials.

The AT4 OVRLANDX concept is also equipped with a roof-mounted tent, 270-degree awning, cooler and kitchenette, truck bed storage with drawer system and a solar panel. The grille and headlamps have unique finishes, while the cabin boasts an exclusive leather-wrapped interior.

“Consumer reaction to this concept’s design will help us further serve the growing market of buyers leading authentic outdoor lifestyles,” said Buick and GMC Global Vice President Duncan Aldred.

If you want a more rugged and capable Canyon, make yourself heard.
