10 Upcoming Hybrid Electric Vehicles to Watch For
Still hesitating to go all-electric? That’s fine, EVs aren’t suited for everybody. However, if you hate to spend so much time at the gas station, maybe a hybrid vehicle could meet your needs.
The list of models available in Canada keeps getting longer and more are on the way. Here’s a gallery highlighting 10 vehicles that are set to gain a hybrid variant any day now or in the near future.

2025 BMW 5 Series
Completely redesigned for 2024, the BMW 5 Series is now available in both gas and electric configurations, the latter called i5. One year later, the German midsize luxury sedan adds two electrified models to its lineup including the 2025 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid. This one features a larger-capacity battery (19 kWh) enabling longer range (exact rating TBD) and higher speeds (up to 140 km/h) in purely electric mode.

2025 Honda Civic
The popular Honda Civic gets a series of updates for the 2025 model year, none bigger than the return of the Civic Hybrid. Production of the new sedan will begin this month in Alliston, Ontario, with the first units landing in dealerships across Canada in July. The Civic Hatchback Hybrid, meanwhile, will be built in Greensburg, Indiana and available later in the summer. Look for 200 horsepower, 232 lb-ft of torque and combined fuel consumption as low as 4.8 L/100 km, according to Honda.

Jeep Gladiator, Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer
Jeep originally had this plan to electrify its entire vehicle lineup by 2025. The Gladiator will be able to live up to the brand’s promise with a 4xe plug-in hybrid variant launching next year. Similar to the Wrangler 4xe, the upcoming Gladiator 4xe will combine a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and 17kWh battery. Look for the same 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. However, pure electric range will likely be slightly different from the 35 km we have with the Wrangler 4xe.
The full-size Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will also get a 4xe variant in 2025, although their system will be more like the one in the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger full-size pickup.

2025 Kia Carnival
Now entering its fourth year, the Kia Carnival is finally adding a hybrid variant. We say “finally” because rivals including the Toyota Sienna and Chrysler Pacifica have been offering a gas-electric model for some time. Ditto for three popular Kia crossovers, namely the Sportage, Sorento and Niro.
The 2025 Kia Carnival Hybrid is equipped with a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine and an electric motor generating 54 kW—the highest output of all Kia hybrid models. The 242 total horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque are handled by a six-speed automatic transmission rather than a CVT like competitors use.
The gas version of the 2025 Kia Carnival is expected to arrive in Canadian dealerships this spring, while the Carnival Hybrid will follow in the summer.

2025 Lamborghini Urus
With the gas-only Urus S and Performante models set to retire before the end of 2024, the only Urus available beginning next year will be the Urus SE plug-in hybrid. Featuring a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine that’s paired with an electric motor mounted inside the eight-speed automatic transmission, it delivers a total of 789 horsepower. The 25.9kWh lithium-ion battery is said to provide more than 60 km of pure electric range based on the WLTP test cycle, but the NRC estimate for Canada has yet to be posted.
Customers who've already made a reservation will begin taking delivery starting from the beginning of 2025, but if you order one today, you'll have to wait at least until the second half of 2025. Learn more about the Lamborghini Urus SE.

2025 Mazda CX-50
Mazda’s electrification plan for North America includes a CX-50 Hybrid that we shall see this year. Built at a joint Mazda-Toyota assembly plant in Alabama, it will borrow Toyota technology as Mazda executives confirmed in a November 2020 presentation. Sales are expected to begin early in 2025, the same year that Mazda will introduce four other hybrid models.

Nissan Rogue
Nissan will turn to Mitsubishi to launch its first-ever plug-in hybrid in North America by the end of 2026, as CEO Makoto Uchida recently announced with the new “The Arc” three-year business plan. Look for a vehicle that features the same technology as the Outlander PHEV—more likely the Rogue since these two are built on the same platform.

2025 Porsche 911
The extensive mid-cycle update to the 911 lineup for the 2025 model year is a huge deal. For the first time in over 60 years, the iconic German sports car is getting an electrified powertrain. Called T-Hybrid and available in GTS trim, the system pairs a newly developed, turbocharged 3.6-litre flat-six engine with various electric motors.

2025 Ram 1500
The fully electric Ram 1500 REV is just one part of the significantly updated 2025 Ram 1500 lineup. Another major highlight is the equally new and electric Ram 1500 Ramcharger, which features an internal combustion engine as a range-extending generator (over 1,100 km total). There is no mechanical link between the engine and the wheels, so this truck is not what most people would call a plug-in hybrid even though it burns gas.
Learn more about the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger, which is expected to go on sale in the U.S. before the end of 2024—likely the first half of 2025 in Canada.

Subaru Forester and Crosstrek
Subaru is gearing up to offer hybrid versions of the Forester and Crosstrek using next-generation technology (and Toyota’s help). The 2026 Forester Hybrid will even be built in Indiana next year, replacing the Legacy.
The Crosstrek Hybrid should be ready to hit the market right around the same time. It won’t be a plug-in hybrid like it used to—more like Subaru’s answer to the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. Further details about the powertrains are expected to be shared in the coming year.
