Tesla’s Superchargers to Open Up to Rivian R1T, R1S

Following the lead of Ford and General Motors, Rivian today said it’s collaborating with Tesla to open charging for Rivian EVs at more than 12,000 Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada.

Deliveries of the R1T pickup and R1S SUV have finally begun after long delays, but the only service centre currently open in Canada is in Richmond, B.C. Others are planned in Toronto, Montreal and Calgary later in 2023 and early in 2024.

Back to Tesla’s Superchargers, Rivian will offer an NACS adapter starting in the spring of next year. Then, in 2025, the company will incorporate NACS charge ports as standard in the R1T and R1S, eliminating the need for said adapter.

However, a CCS adapter will be offered at the same time allowing customers to use third-party DC fast chargers across North America.

Rivian’s digital ecosystem including its mobile app and in-vehicle navigation system will be updated with NACS charging sites when available.

This collaboration between Rivian and Tesla doesn’t affect the former’s plans to expand its own charging network—called Rivian Adventure Network—to over 3,500 fast chargers at more than 600 sites in North America. Most will be conveniently located on highways and main roads, often by cafes and shops, while others will be found near trails and other adventure sites.
