Rivian to Recall Nearly All Vehicles Sold Thus Far

Now that’s embarrassing. Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian, which makes the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, has said it will recall nearly all the vehicles it has delivered to customers thus far, or about 13,000 units.

So, what’s the problem? It appears that a fastener connecting the front upper-control arm and steering knuckle may not be torqued enough and could potentially affect drivers' ability to steer.

Rivian is aware of seven incidents possibly related to the issue, but luckily no injuries have been reported.

“If you experience excessive noise, vibration or harshness from the front suspension, or a change in steering performance or feel, you should call immediately,” CEO RJ Scaringe wrote in an email sent to vehicle owners.

The Irvine, California-based company will conduct mobile inspections and repairs where a technician will come to the owner’s preferred location. Normally, it shouldn’t take more than 30 days to fix all the affected vehicles, Rivian said.

None of them are in Canada since deliveries on this side of the border won’t start until November (Rivian, surprisingly, has only just received its certification from Transport Canada). However, this recall comes in the wake of various supply chain and production setbacks that have compromised Rivian’s launch. The brand’s stock is down 67 percent so far in 2022.

A first Rivian service centre in Canada will soon open in the Vancouver area, where the automaker will prioritize deliveries. The Toronto and Montreal markets will follow.
