Mustang, Camaro: What Sold More in 2009

When the Camaro first burst back onto the scene last year, it was walking into a comparison that had been six years in the making. Without a decent competitor to the ubiquitous ponycar, GM aficionados were eager to see how their prized two-door coupe would stack up against a car that had invented and reinvented the segment year after year.

And although the driving impressions were mixed, the sales figures weren’t: the Mustang has won... sort of. Although moving 66,623 Mustangs for the 2009 model year, Chevy has put just 61,618 Camaros in driveways. But, having been introduced mid-year, the Camaro’s lower, but still close sales figure bears out the interesting fact that it has outsold the Mustang in every month since its July introduction.

But given Mustang sales increased by 60% as the year came to a close, the 2011 race is already heating up. Destined to be the first year in which the two ponycars will truly be able to duke it out, Ford fans are looking forward to the upcoming 5.0L V8 while Camaro enthusiasts pray for a miracle that will see the anticipating Camaro convertible’s release.
