The Car Guide’s 2019 Best Buys: Mercedes-Benz A-Class

Every year, The Car Guide’s editorial team publishes its list of Best Buys in a wide variety of vehicle categories. Aside from these award-winning cars and utility vehicles, The Car Guide also hands out titles for the Best New Car of the Year and the Best New SUV of the Year.

This year, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class stood out among all the new cars introduced to our market. After grabbing the Best Buy title in the subcompact luxury car category, after a second round of voting by The Car Guide’s journalists, it was also named the Best New Car of the Year for 2019.

We loved its driving dynamics, its smart looks as well as the design and quality of its cockpit. However, the A-Class also introduces Mercedes-Benz’s new MBUX infotainment system, which will find its way into all of the brand’s future products.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class will be offered in A 250 five-door and A 220 sedan configurations. Both are equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that develops 221 horsepower and the A 250 and 188 horsepower in the A 220. An all-wheel drivetrain is also available in both variants. The A 250 will start at $35,990 before freight and delivery charges.

In the subcompact luxury car category, second place went to the Audi A3 (MSRP from $34,300) that’s available in sedan and cabriolet body styles, the former being also offered in spicy (Audi S3) and flaming hot (Audi RS 3) flavours. The BMW 2 Series (MSRP from $38,050), which serves up a high level of driving pleasure in coupe and cabriolet configurations, including the exhilarating BMW M2, completes the podium.

As for the Best New Car of the Year award, the Nissan LEAF (MSRP from $36,798) finished in second place, thanks to its interesting EV driving range, its ride comfort and its reasonable price. In third place, we find the Genesis G70 (MSRP from $42,000, freight included) that impressed us with its driving dynamics and luxurious cockpit.
