2019 Cadillac XT4: A New Luxury Subcompact SUV

The luxury subcompact SUV class will see a new player in the game next year: the Cadillac XT4. This is uncharted territory for the brand and the model will target the well-established BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3. Meanwhile, the 2019 Lexus UX will arrive at the party right around the same time.

Once again, Cadillac will emphasize luxury and technology with the XT4, pitting it against several rivals who rely more on sportiness and a driving pleasure. Style-wise, the model has the same DNA as the brand’s newer vehicles, but with an enhanced presence thanks to a boxier overall design—especially in front.

A more dynamic approach will be used for the Sport version, in particular with black and monochrome rims, grille and trim, similar to what you find on the V Series high-performance vehicles.

On board, expect an ultra-modern dashboard including the latest-generation CUE entertainment system as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. They also took the opportunity to introduce a new control dial on the central console, mirroring what the competition—mostly German—is offering. The 2019 Cadillac XT4 is also hoping that a spacious cabin will set it apart from its rivals, especially since every millimetre counts in subcompact vehicles. In fact, the XT4 is bigger in all dimensions than all of its main adversaries, which almost puts it in a category of its own.

Just one engine

The only available engine is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that generates 237 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. This new engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger that optimizes torque delivery at lower revs, and it’s more powerful than many rival powertrains. The XT4’s towing capacity of 1588 kilograms (3500 pounds) is an appealing characteristic, since towing is often not recommended in this market segment.

To reduce fuel consumption, the engine uses cylinder deactivation technology and has been paired with a nine-speed automatic gearbox. All-wheel drive is optional unless you get one of the higher-end versions, but many buyers will consider it a must.

The 2019 Cadillac XT4, which will be assembled at the GM plant in Kansas City, should be available in Canada this fall. Canadian pricing will be released at a later date.
