Update On $1 Car Sales At SAAQ : Back To Normal?

A few days ago, we reported that the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) rolled out a new law on used vehicles. From now on, each vehicle would be a minimal value of $500, meaning it would be impossible to state you sold a car – that you gave to someone – for $1 as a way of avoiding to pay taxes. Used vehicles between nine and 25 years old would also have to be evaluated by Revenu Quebec. This information was shared to us by our partner Montreal Racing.

Today, we learned that said change never actually happened: Genevieve Laurier, spokesperson for Revenu Quebec, confirmed that there have been no changes whatsoever to used vehicle taxation. The government agency also sent out a few tweets confirming this.

Furthermore, one of our collaborators recently bought a car and reported that on December 7th, he had no trouble registering and paying taxes for his vehicle, even though it is more than nine years old. He was told that the new law was lifted on December 3rd, since Revenu Quebec wasn’t able to cope with the number of people visiting their office for an evaluation.
