SAAQ Will Introduce A ''Pay How You Drive'' GPS Device

The SAAQ will be testing a new system in order to improve road safety and lower insurance contributions from Quebecers. In 2016, motorists may, on a voluntary basis, opt to install a GPS module under their dashboards to monitor their driving habits so that they can possibly receive discounts. Factors affecting the score will include the number of kilometers driven, excessive speeding, hard braking, rapid acceleration and poorly negotiated curves.

Some private insurers have been offering the “pay how you drive” service for several years now. For example, Industrial Alliance was the first Canadian company to offer discounts to customers who used the devices and consequently adjusted their driving habits.  Other companies have followed suit.

Nathalie Tremblay , the director of the SAAQ ,said in an interview with Le Soleil that, “We think it can be a winner if we make the tool available and give the customer the choice to use it or not.”

The pilot project will be launched next year.
