BMW-Toyota Super Coupe Set For 2017?

We’ve been aware of a joint venture by BMW and Toyota to develop some kind of sports car together but so few details have emerged that we can only speculate as to what it would be.

For a while many people thought it would be the next Supra but those rumors were put to bed after Toyota announced their FT-1 concept car is entirely a Toyota creation.

German publication AutoZeitung has managed to pry a few details from a source at BMW about the project. According to the source, the car won’t be so exclusive so as to limit its ownership to the ultra-wealthy. The layout will be front-engine and rear-wheel drive and use a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six as a power plant. As with the i8 and i3, it will make use of advanced carbon fiber technology to keep it lightweight. The publication published the rendering pictured above.

Expect the Toyota to be less expensive by 10,000-20,000 dollars and be less focused on luxury and frills than the BMW.

The projected launch date is around 2017.
