As the all-new 2020 Ford Escape goes on sale in Canada, The Car Guide decided to revisit the history of this American compact SUV, which was once the most popular in its class on this side of the border.

Initially launched in 2000 (as a 2001 model) as the mechanical twin of the late Mazda Tribute, the Escape is now entering its fourth generation. As we found out during our first drive recently, the new model has plenty going for it. Is the No. 1 spot on sales charts within reach? We’ll see.
