All-New 2027 Volvo EX60 is the Brand’s Most Advanced EV Yet

Just about every auto journalist will tell you that the 2027 BMW iX3 has set a new benchmark in the electric midsize crossover segment ($75,000-$100,000) with rewarding driving dynamics as well as impressive technology and range. Not to be outdone, Volvo also wants to raise the bar and elevate itself above the crowded field of a dozen plus competitors in Canada.

The all-new 2027 Volvo EX60 making its global debut today does not replace the gas-powered XC60—just as the iX3 does not replace the X3. Naturally, the competition will be fierce. In addition to the iX3, customers also have (or soon will have) the Acura RSX, Audi Q6 e-tron, Cadillac Lyriq, Genesis Electrified GV70, Jeep Wagoneer S, Lexus RZ, Mercedes-Benz GLC EQ, Polestar 4, Porsche Macan Electric and Tesla Model Y to choose from. More contenders are expected to arrive later.

Volvo therefore cannot afford any mistakes, especially here in Canada where the lineup is losing quite a few entries for 2026. The EC40 and EX90 won’t return when dealers run out of units, the EX40 offers just one trim level, and sedans and wagons are all on the way out, too. As you can see, the EX60 is absolutely critical for the Swedish automaker.

Much like its rivals at BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the EX60 boasts extremely modern looks. Some elements are reminiscent of the iX3 (which is barely 20 mm shorter), particularly the rear quarter windows and three-quarter panel design. That said, the new Volvo is arguably classier while achieving an excellent drag coefficient of 0.26.

It further stands out with an adventure-focused Cross Country variant, which will attract drivers that others can’t because they lack a similar offering. This model, to be launched at a later date, will feature an adjustable air suspension with a 20mm lift, specific tires and distinctive exterior styling including several unique colour combinations. By the way, Volvo introduced its first Cross Country model nearly 30 years ago, more specifically the XC70 Cross Country back in 1997. Many more have followed, the latest one being the little EX30 Cross Country.

P10 Model to Launch First

The 2027 Volvo EX60 marks the debut of a new nomenclature—P6, P10 and P12. These names don’t really mean anything except referring to a different battery. The P6 model (not available in North America) uses an 83kWh pack, the P10 increases capacity to 95 kWh, and the P12 gets a 117kWh battery.

Volvo will initially launch the EX60 in P10 configuration, which is also the one that the Cross Country variant is based on. Range is estimated at 514 km on a full charge, while maximum DC charging capacity is 370 kW, providing 270 km of range in just 10 minutes under ideal weather conditions.

Equipped with two electric motors and all-wheel drive, the EX60 P10 also comes standard with an adaptive suspension and 20-inch wheels. As for performance, look for peak output of 503 horsepower and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4.6 seconds, which is great. Want more? The P12 model will make a number of competitors jealous with up to 640 km of range, as much as 671 horsepower and 0-100 km/h sprints as quick as 3.9 seconds.

Based on the modular SPA3 platform, the EX60 will have the smallest well-to-wheel carbon footprint of any Volvo electric vehicle to date thanks to extensive use of recycled materials as well as advanced painting and manufacturing processes. Meanwhile, the company has made further improvements when it comes to material selection, fit and finish, eclipsing some of the brand's products that have slightly disappointed in that area in recent years. If you think Volvos are kind of drab and uninspiring these days, we’re pleased to report that the new EX60 amazes with high levels of luxury and authentic Scandinavian character.

Music lovers will most certainly enjoy the available 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system with speakers built into all four headrests. In-car technology also impresses with a Google-powered AI assistant as well as HuginCore, which enables smart learning. Basically, the EX60 will learn and adapt to the driver’s habits and preferences over time. This technology also allows for the continuous improvement of driver assistance features through data collection.

Coming This Fall

The 2027 Volvo EX60 will go on sale across Canada in the fall of 2026 with a base MSRP of $77,500 plus freight, PDI and other fees. Various equipment options will be offered for the P10 model. As mentioned earlier, the more rugged Cross Country and high-performance P12 models will arrive later in 2027.

Interestingly, production of the EX60 will take place at the Torslanda plant in Sweden, thus keeping it free from import restrictions and Canadian tariffs on U.S.-built vehicles.
