2025 Canadian New-Vehicle Sales: Winners and Losers

New light-duty vehicle sales in Canada increased by 2% in 2025, four times slower than the previous year when the growth was 8.2%, according to a compilation of annual sales published by Automotive News Research and Data Center.

This market slowdown was mainly caused by the U.S.-Canada trade war, halted imports of certain models, as well as the suspension or elimination of incentives for zero-emission vehicles.

Still, with 1,897,058 vehicles sold in 2025, the Canadian automotive industry recorded its highest total since 2019, the last year before the pandemic. A historically low 12.4% of those vehicles were traditional passenger cars.

The Winners

General Motors dominated for a third consecutive year with a market share of 15.5% and 299,813 units sold, up 1.9% compared to 2024. Its Cadillac and GMC brands each had their best year ever.

Ford ranked second among manufacturers with 293,897 sales in Canada in 2025, a 5.5% increase. Among brands, no other managed to beat its 283,200 units. Nearly half of the Blue Oval’s success is attributable to the F-Series (138,470 units), which became the most popular pickup for the 60th consecutive year and the overall best-selling vehicle for the 15th consecutive year, across all categories.

Toyota rounded out the top three automakers thanks to a 4.4% increase propelling its Canadian sales to a new all-time high of 249,445 vehicles. Specifically, Toyota (216,258 units) and Lexus (33,187 units) each broke their records, with the latter doing so for the third consecutive year. Despite being near the end of its generation, the RAV4 enjoyed its second-best year ever with 75,573 units sold and remains by far the best-selling passenger vehicle nationwide.

Other strong performers included Buick (24.4%), MINI, (22.2%), Lincoln (17.8%), Mazda (13.2%), Hyundai/Genesis (11.3%), Audi (10.6%), Kia (9.2%), Mercedes-Benz (8.4%) and Volvo (8.2%).

The Losers

As we mentioned in our top automotive stories of 2025, Tesla experienced a significant downturn. Its sales plummeted worldwide, including a 66.7% drop in Canada to mere 18,359 units. The company's owner, billionaire Elon Musk, consistently made headlines for his controversial actions and his role in the Trump administration. Price hikes, tariffs and waning demand for electric vehicles all negatively impacted the brand's performance.

With 114,720 units sold, Stellantis declined by 11.7%, primarily due to the struggles of Dodge (-24%), Ram (-23.3%) and Jeep (-11.1%). Fortunately, Chrysler was up 60.8% and provided some positive news.

Saleswise, the year 2025 was not a good one either for Maserati (-35.4%), Infiniti (-14.7%), Jaguar (-13.9%), Mitsubishi (-4.1%), Porsche (-3.5%) and Chevrolet (-0.7%).
