GM Canada Recalls 41,000 Pickups for Tailgate That Could Accidentally Open

General Motors has to recall 41,000 pickup trucks in Canada. Specifically, the affected models include the 2023-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500.

It’s a problem we’ve heard about before. Water could leak into the exterior tailgate switch and cause the tailgate to unlatch and open unexpectedly while parked. If this happens, unsecured cargo might fall out of the truck bed and onto the road when the vehicle is moving.

To be clear, this recall only affects Silverados and Sierras equipped with a power-locking tailgate.

General Motors will notify owners by mail and advise them to take their truck to a dealership to replace the exterior tailgate switch. Until then, the company recommends owners to inspect the tailgate to ensure it's closed and latched before driving.

If you remember, a recall for the same type of problem was announced in February 2024. At that time, nearly 250,000 pickups from the 2020 to 2024 model years were affected, including Silverado HD and Sierra HD models.

Earlier this spring, the Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 were also recalled because the 6.2-litre V8’s connecting rods and/or crankshaft components may not have been manufactured properly. As a result, the engine could make abnormal noises, lose power or fail. A repair or replacement may be necessary. However, for vehicles that pass the inspection, dealers will simply replace the oil with a higher-viscosity oil, install a new oil fill cap and replace the oil filter.
