The Best Full-Size Pickups in 2025

Looking at all the full-size pickups on the market, the team at The Car Guide has identified the three models that represent the best buys for 2025.

This is a market segment that continues to prove immensely popular in Canada. While some people use these trucks as work tools, others opt for the more luxurious models as their everyday vehicles. Let’s not forget their hardcore and extremely capable variants designed for off-road driving.

1. Ford F-150

For the third year in a row, the Ford F-150 takes the top spot in our rankings, mainly because it offers a wide variety of models and powertrain options including 2.7- and 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engines, a naturally aspirated V8, hybrid and fully electric units, as well as high-performance Raptor and Raptor R models.

The F-150's handling is fairly satisfying despite a slight tendency for the rear axle to hop when unladen. In our opinion, the 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 does an excellent job as the standard engine and is fuel-efficient enough for daily use. If you want to tow heavier loads, the 3.5-litre EcoBoost makes more sense.

Featuring a hybrid system, the F-150 PowerBoost delivers pretty reasonable fuel economy, but it suffers from more reliability issues than other models in the lineup.

Last but not least, the Raptor and Raptor R models are a real delight for off-road enthusiasts. Fans of high-horsepower trucks will love them, too. The supercharged V8 in the Raptor R is more ferocious and vocal than the twin-turbo straight-six motivating the new Ram 1500 RHO, although it comes with a much heftier price.

2. Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra

The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra remain in second place. When you add up all the different models sold by GM, selection is seriously impressive. While the two brands used to lag behind Ford when it comes to electrification, fully electric variants of these trucks have finally hit the market.

As far as gasoline engines are concerned, it’s business as usual. The 5.3- and 6.2-litre V8 engines stick around, burning slightly more fuel than Ford's but offering superior reliability.

Unlike Ford and Ram, which have abandoned diesel engines, GM still offers its turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder Duramax—a fuel-efficient alternative that can be very interesting for those who drive a lot. On the other hand, the entry-level turbocharged 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine (shared with the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon) doesn't strike us as a particularly good match for a full-size pickup.

Although GM’s cabins aren’t quite on the same level as Ram’s in terms of interior fit and finish, the improvements that were made as part of the latest redesign have done the Silverado and Sierra a world of good.

Just like the competition, both Chevrolet (Silverado 1500 ZR2) and GMC (Sierra 1500 AT4X)  offer more aggressive and more rugged models. While not in the same league as the F-150 Raptor, these trucks are still capable of delivering solid performance in the dirt.

3. Ram 1500

Similar to last year, the Ram 1500 rounds out our all-American top 3 in the full-size pickup segment for 2025.

As soon as you step inside, you'll be impressed by the level of refinement and the quality materials used throughout. We also think the Ram 1500 is a leader in stability and handling when fitted with the optional air suspension. The problem is that this type of suspension is far from the most reliable, particularly in winter.

The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 remains as the default engine, while the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 has been replaced by the twin-turbo 3.0-litre six-cylinder Ram calls “Hurricane.” The latter is available in standard- and high-output versions. We’re still waiting for Stellantis to confirm rumours about the V8’s return to the Ram 1500 lineup for 2026.

The less pragmatic and less rational model you can buy is the Ram 1500 RHO, which replaces the almighty TRX. While handling impresses, the six-cylinder Hurricane lacks the growling supercharged V8 that made the TRX such a special machine.

As a final note, the Ram 1500 Classic—a lower-priced truck based on the previous generation—has been discontinued, resulting in a significantly higher entry point to Ram’s pickup range.
