Nissan’s Latest Product is a Tire-Scented Perfume, For Real

Remember last year when a New York art collective fulfilled the olfactory dream of gearheads by creating a cologne inspired by the famous WD-40 spray lubricant? Here’s another intriguing option: perfume that smells like tires.

We kid you not. Check your calendar—this is not April 1. Japanese automaker Nissan came up with the idea, and it’s not that surprising given that the company has its own line of perfumes, some of which are named after its vehicles including the 350Z, GT-R, Armada and Patrol.

According to Top Gear, the new fragrance is called “Smell My Dust” and uses a combination of actual tire dust and sakuras a.k.a. cherry blossoms, which are quite popular in the land of the rising sun. That’s an odd mix, for sure, but apparently today’s younger generations are fond of weird mixtures that help them stand out, Nissan said.

The launch comes a few days prior to the Formula E Grand Prix of Shanghai. Nissan actually teamed up with a Shanghai-based lab to develop this new perfume, which is also a way to celebrate its success in the electric racing series’ 2023 championship (currently third in the standings).

It’s not immediately clear how Nissan plans to sell and distribute “Smell My Dust.” Other perfumes from the manufacturer are mainly available in the U.A.E., but you can also find them online as well as in select stores in the U.S.
