Chevrolet Unveils Next-Gen 2025 Equinox

It's fair to say that Chevrolet’s SUV lineup covers as many bases as possible with the Trailblazer, Equinox, Blazer, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban... and that's without counting GMC's line-up of counterparts. The electric Equinox has shown its face a few times at trade shows, but we're still waiting for it to hit the road.

But for now, The Car Guide got a quick glance at the next-generation gas-powered Equinox. Here's what we learned.

Three Models, Two Transmissions, One Engine

For 2025, the gas-powered Equinox comes in three models: LT, RS, and ACTIV - the latter being new to the Equinox range with a series of adventure-oriented aesthetic elements. The basic LS variant has been dropped, which could push up the model's base price.

Physically, this compact SUV now sports a squarer, sturdier look. But it is also 2.5 inches wider which enhances its presence. Under the hood, the previous generation's turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder remains, with an unchanged output of 175 hp. However, GM has swapped the aging six-speed automatic transmission for a continuously variable transmission (CVT) on front-wheel drive (FWD) models, and an 8-speed automatic on all-wheel drive (AWD) models. In terms of towing capacity, front-wheel drive models can tow a maximum of 900 lbs, while all-wheel drive models will haul up to 1,500 lbs. In Canada, the RS and ACTIV variants come with all-wheel drive as standard.

A Modernized Interior

The interior of the new Equinox is visibly enhanced, both in terms of design and materials. Chevrolet has (obviously) opted for a combination of screens inside the dashboard. The all-digital 11-inch instrument cluster in front of the driver displays vehicle-related information, while the central 11.3-inch screen uses Chevrolet's infotainment system. While General Motors is considering dropping the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto software suites in favour of its own system developed in conjunction with Google, we were told that Equinox 2025 owners will still be able to use these popular programs for now.

In terms of ergonomics, Chevrolet has made a few changes in order to maximize space. In addition, the gearshift lever has been relocated and now takes the form of an arm of the steering column. Cargo space remains unchanged compared to the outgoing model, with 847 litres in normal configuration.

As the lineup now begins with the LT variant, standard equipment is more extensive, particularly in terms of safety, with automatic emergency braking at intersections, side bike alert, lane departure warning with side blind spot detection, adaptive cruise control and much more. Heated front seats and heated steering wheel are also standard across the range.

Ordering for the Chevrolet Equinox 2025 is expected to begin mid-2024.
