Over 40 Percent of Toyotas Sold in Canada Are Electrified Vehicles
Many have criticized Toyota for not doing nearly enough when it comes to battery-electric vehicles, but they can’t deny the Japanese automaker’s success where hybrids are concerned.
Case in point: sales of electrified Toyota and Lexus vehicles in Canada have increased 92.8 percent in 2023. The 99,824 units sold accounted for 43.9 percent of total vehicle sales in the country (227,460 units). You won’t find a larger proportion among all legacy automakers.

If you look at Toyota’s luxury brand, 55 percent of Canadian sales are now hybrids or EVs. Remember, Lexus plans to go all-electric in North America by 2030.
Q4 was a record quarter for Toyota Canada with 24,533 electrified vehicles sold, up 96.7 percent year over year.
RAV4 and Corolla Keep Leading the Way
Aside from pickups, the Toyota RAV4 remains the best-selling passenger vehicle in Canada, having found 74,688 takers in 2023. This includes 30,741 RAV4 Hybrids (+130 percent) and 8,208 RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrids (+423,8 percent).
The Toyota Corolla, meanwhile, soldiered on for its second year as the best-selling car in the country, achieving sales of 28,260 units including 9,676 Corolla Hybrids (+236,1 percent).
The Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Lexus NX Hybrid and Lexus RX Hybrid all enjoyed their best year ever in terms of Canadian sales.
And despite lagging behind the competition in the range and charging speed departments, the fully electric Toyota bZ4X still sold 4,179 units in its first full year on the market—not quite as many as the Hyundai IONIQ 5 but more than the Kia EV6.
