2024 Hyundai Kona Electric is More Expensive, Still a Great Buy

The electric variant of the completely redesigned 2024 Hyundai Kona will go on sale in Canada this winter as initially planned. Two trim levels are available, and we now know how much customers will pay.

The base Kona Electric Preferred starts at $46,399, while the more upscale Kona Electric Ultimate retails from $51,199. This represents significant yet reasonable increases of $1,800 and $1,500, respectively, versus the outgoing generation. In both cases, you need to add $1,925 freight and PDI, but don’t forget about the $5,000 EV rebate from the federal government plus provincial rebates of up to $7,000 where applicable.

Equipped with a 64.8kWh battery, the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric offers an NRC-estimated range of 420 km (previously 415 km). Meanwhile, the electric motor is still rated at 201 horsepower, but torque is down from 291 lb-ft to 188 lb-ft, which should affect acceleration quite a bit. We’ll know for sure when we take it for a test drive soon.

The new Kona Electric stands out from its predecessor with many desirable features such as a frunk, two-way charging capability, one-pedal driving and a Smart Regenerative System that adjusts energy recuperation according to real-time traffic conditions. Let’s not forget the heat pump that maximizes range and reduces charging times. Incidentally, Hyundai claims the battery can charge from 10-80 percent in approximately 43 minutes when using a DC fast charger.

And how can you not be impressed with the transformation inside the vehicle? The 2024 Kona Electric comes standard with a large 12.3-inch touchscreen incorporating a next-generation infotainment system plus wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. Hyundai’s Smartsense safety features are standard, too. With the Ultimate trim, customers will also get a Bose premium audio system, head-up display, wireless smartphone charger and digital key.
