Toyota Canada Recalls 50,000 Highlanders With Loose Bumper Covers

Toyota is announcing a recall on approximately 50,000 midsize SUVs in Canada due to an assembly issue, adding to the 750,000 units that were recalled in the U.S. last week.

Affected models include the 2020-2023 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid. The recall notice posted by Transport Canada says the front lower bumper cover on some of them may not be attached properly.

“As a result, if there is a minor impact to the front bumper, the lower bumper cover, the engine under cover and the fender liners could separate from the vehicle while driving,” the document explains.

Parts that fall onto the road inevitably increase the risk of an accident for other drivers.

Owners will be notified by mail in the coming weeks and asked to take their SUV to a dealership to inspect the front bumper cover and secure it. If damage is found, Toyota says the dealer will also replace the upper and/or lower front bumper cover(s).

Both the Highlander and Highlander Hybrid are built in Princeton, Indiana, unlike the Toyota RAV4, Lexus NX and Lexus RX which are manufactured in Cambridge and Woodstock, Ontario. The two Canadian plants have won several North American and international awards for quality.
