Gone Camping: GMC Hummer EV EarthCruiser is One Cool Upfit

GMC has more surprises in store when it comes to the all-electric Hummer EV. The company today unveiled a seriously cool and classy overlanding model we’d definitely like to roam the planet with.

Making its public debut at Overland Expo Mountain West in Loveland, Colorado this weekend, the new GMC Hummer EV EarthCruiser was developed with the help of overlanding specialist EarthCruiser from Bend, Oregon. It’s obviously aimed at wealthy adventure and camping enthusiasts who want to reduce their carbon footprint.

"Using our years of overlanding expertise, we have ensured nothing is out of place, unnecessary or wasted in this vehicle,” said EarthCruiser CEO and Founder Lance Gillies. “This collaboration with the GMC team has provided the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the zero-tailpipe emission possibilities for overland and recreational vehicle travelers.”

The upfit starts with a carbon fibre EarthCruiser house fully integrated into the chassis of the electric pickup and complete with an insulated, tri-layered pop-up roof. Max height is 117 inches (2.97 metres) in “Camp Mode” with the roof up and 90 inches (2.29 metres) in “Drive Mode” with the roof down.

There’s an exterior recovery gear storage compartment on the driver’s side, exterior filtered water access (with a 13.5-gallon/51-litre tank), exterior scene lights and lockable utility hook-ups.

Inside the house, 80 inches (2 metres) of clearance means there’s no problem standing. Amenities include a double full-size bed, sink, induction cooktop, refrigerator/freezer, water heater, indoor and outdoor shower, 12V and 120V power outlets, several storage solutions and a flat-pack toilet. A 7-inch touchscreen system control panel is designed for ease of use.

No worries about running out of power: EarthCruiser says onboard solar power with 605W along with an innovative system of 6 kWh of 12V lithium battery provide an estimated seven days of off-grid power.

The GMC Hummer EV EarthCruiser upfit is expected to be available to customers in 2024 through EarthCruiser. You can make a reservation now, though pricing is not specified yet. Crucially, the upfit is not covered by the GM New Vehicle Limited Warranty and GM is not responsible for independent-supplier alterations.
