Pre-Owned Ram 1500: What Model Should You Choose?
The Ram 1500 is getting more expensive every day, just like other trucks in the industry today, but luckily, there are alternatives.
First, for those who want to buy a brand-new pickup, Dodge is still selling the previous- generation model (now called Ram 1500 Classic) along with the latest version. It’s a good way to get a full-size truck fresh out of the plant without paying a high price.

Of course, you’ll have to live with a slightly less modern interior and exterior design, and a smaller number of convenient features and technologies, but this model still accounts for 40% of all Ram sales in the country. There’s clearly something attractive and convincing about that product.
Pre-Owned Ram 1500
A used example would be better for you? No problem. If we look at the former-generation Ram 1500, we see that there’s plenty of possible configurations; its three cab sizes (single, extended and crew) are just one example. There’s also a whole host of trims available, not to mention special editions like Limited Tungsten or Harvest.
For a cheaper solution, go for a ST, SLT or Tradesman version. In the mid-range, the Sport is an interesting option too. Now exclusive to Canada, it’s favoured by urban drivers, who appreciate its design, power and great versatility. A more aggressive hood, a sport exhaust, 20 or 22-inch rims, and a monochrome style (no chrome trim) are on the menu.
The Ram 1500 Rebel is intended for those who want a robust truck for off-road adventures. You see it right away in its tires and suspension, but also in its grille and bumpers. On the other hand, maximum luxury can be found in the Limited trim, or in the Laramie and Longhorn as well. As its name implies, the latter features a unique western-style interior.
If you want a more recent Ram 1500, there’s the current-generation model, which was launched in 2019. Warning: it doesn’t come with a single cab anymore. And forget about the ST and SLT base trims, too: the range now begins with the Tradesman and Big Horn. The top-end versions are practically the same, except for the mighty and very expensive TRX with its 702-horsepower supercharged V8, which was added for 2021.
The Ram 1500’s Engines
As far as engines go, the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 are both available with the eTorque light hybrid system (except in the Ram 1500 Classic), so look for that name if you want to save a bit of fuel.
By the way, the 3-litre EcoDiesel V6’s fuel efficiency and high torque might be interesting, but the additional cost compared to a similar gas-powered truck is probably not worth it. It all depends on your driving needs and habits, but also be aware that this engine requires more maintenance, and its reliability isn’t as good as the other two. For example, its high-pressure fuel pump is prone to failure, and a recall was issued regarding this matter.
