2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE 4MATIC+ Coming to Canada This Fall

Mercedes-Benz has now unveiled the performance variant of its second electric sedan, the EQE, which we first saw at the 2021 IAA in Munich. Good news: it will go on sale in Canada in the fourth quarter of 2022.

A midsize car similar to the E-Class but with a dynamic profile more akin to the CLS four-door coupe, the new 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE 4MATIC+ boasts a pair of electric motors that combine to generate up to 677 horsepower and anywhere between 633-738 pound-feet of torque. As the name implies, a fully variable all-wheel drive system is included. In fact, torque distribution is checked 160 times per second and adjusted as needed.

Acceleration from 0-100 km/h can be achieved in just 3.3 seconds with RACE START (launch control). Interestingly, with the AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE, drivers can select the sound characteristics "Balanced", "Sport" and "Powerful" in any drive mode using the AMG steering wheel buttons or the centre display.

The other part of the powertrain that must be talked about is the battery, obviously. It has a usable energy content of 90.6 kWh and its management system is tuned specifically for AMG. In the Sport and Sport+ drive modes, the focus is on performance, while in the Comfort drive mode the focus is on operating range.

How much range are we talking about? Mercedes-Benz rates it at 444 kilometres based on the WLTP standard, which is more optimistic than the one used in Canada. When plugged into a DC fast charger at up to 170 kW, 15 minutes will give you back 180 kilometres of range. As a side note, the recuperation power of the braking system reaches up to 260 kW. Drivers can adjust the level of recuperation in three stages via switches on the steering wheel.

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE 4MATIC+ is also blessed with an AMG RIDE CONTROL+ adaptive air suspension, Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires that are specifically designed for performance electric vehicles, standard rear-axle steering (the rear wheels can turn up to 3.6 degrees to maximize handling), as well as AMG high-performance brakes with six-piston callipers and 415-millimetre discs up front. The optional AMG ceramic high-performance compound brakes use even larger discs measuring 440 millimetres at the front.

Exterior design highlights include an AMG-specific black panel grille with hot-stamped vertical struts in chrome, integrated Mercedes star and "AMG" lettering. There are many different aerodynamic tweaks, plus AMG light-alloy wheels. Inside, prepare to be wowed by the sport seats, steering wheel and pedals in typical AMG style, but also the available MBUX Hyperscreen. Naturally, the displays have AMG-specific graphics and menus.

Remember, Mercedes-EQ drivers currently have access to nearly 9,000 public charging ports in total across Canada, including more than 1,300 DC fast chargers. The Mercedes me Charge ecosystem can also provide access to an additional 2,400 semi-public ports on the ChargePoint network that reside in environments like workplaces, shopping malls and hotels.

Pricing for the 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE 4MATIC+ will be announced closer to launch in the fall.
