GM Increases Chevrolet Silverado Production in Oshawa
After accelerating the reopening of Oshawa Assembly in Ontario to meet growing pickup truck demand in North America, General Motors today announced the addition of a second shift.
This comes just two months after the first Chevrolet Silverados rolled off the line at the upgraded plant, which benefited from an investment of $1.3 billion.

For now, Oshawa only builds Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD models. The Silverado 1500 will join them at a later date, making Oshawa the automaker’s only plant capable of building both heavy- and light-duty trucks.
Another thing you must know is that Chevrolet is the only brand represented. The GMC equivalents will continue to be manufactured at U.S. plants.
“Adding a second shift of truck production so quickly after launch continues Oshawa’s long history of speed and agility and helps GM meet strong customer demand for its largest and most important market segment,” said Scott Bell, GM Canada president and managing director.
The Chevrolet Silverado (including the heavy-duty models) was the fifth best-selling vehicle in Canada last year, just behind the GMC Sierra. Its sales were down 2.1 percent from 2020 as the chip shortage largely affected production.
Back in November, GM announced the hiring and training of 1,800 new workers, with a focus on diversity and gender equality. As a result, for the first time in the plant’s history, over half of Oshawa’s new production hires are women.
GM Canada says it received more than 13,000 resumes for the available jobs.
