The Car Guide’s 2020 Best Buys: Ram 1500

Every year, The Car Guide publishes its Best Buys in nearly 30 different vehicle categories. Today we continue our review of the 2020 winners with a look at full-size pickups.

Despite a few changes and new technologies making their debut this year, we didn’t modify our top 3, meaning the Ram 1500 (MSRP from $44,245) is our Best Buy for 2020.

FCA’s star shines with sleeker looks than rivals, a spacious and refined cabin, beautiful road manners as a daily driver and a user-friendly infotainment system on a big centre display up to 12 inches in size.

Of course, it also impresses in the towing department, while the new multi-function tailgate proves quite handy. And don’t forget the lockable Ram Box compartments on each side of the cargo bed.

Furthermore, the Ram 1500 benefits from a mild hybrid system called eTorque that lowers fuel consumption and provides an extra dose of torque with both the 3.6-litre V6 and the 5.7-litre HEMI V8). The 2020 model year also brings a 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 with 260 horsepower, 480 pound-feet of torque and a combined fuel rating as low as 9.0 L/100 km.

Sharing second place are the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (MSRP from $31,298) and GMC Sierra 1500 (MSRP from $32,498). These two feel solid on the road, offer many advanced towing gadgets and deliver plenty of smooth power with their available 6.2-litre V8.

Ranking third once again, the Ford F-150 (MSRP from $32,339) boasts a tremendous array of configurations and powertrains, including powerful twin-turbo V6 engines that provide great towing capabilities, while the drive is balanced and pleasant.

The Car Guide’s 2020 Scores

  1. Ram 1500 – 80%
  2. Chevrolet Silverado 1500/GMC Sierra 1500 – 77%
  3. Ford F-150 – 76%
