The Car Guide’s 2019 Best Buys: Toyota Avalon

In order to help consumers during their new-vehicle shopping process, The Car Guide’s team of journalists publishes each year its Best Buys in a wide range of car and truck segments.

In the full-size sedan category, it’s the Toyota Avalon that grabbed the Best Buy title for 2019. Fresh of a major redesign, the Avalon charmed The Car Guide’s staff by its great ride comfort, but also for its enhanced dynamic driving characteristics. It’s sporty character—not too sport, mind you—is a clear break from the blandness this sedan has long been known for.

We also like its new, edgier design with its low roofline, its massive front grille and its resolutely athletic proportions. The XSE variant also adds a touch of flair without being overdone. Last but not least, we truly appreciate the smoothness, refinement and fuel economy of its 3.5-litre V6 engine, which develops 301 horsepower. The Toyota Avalon retails from $42,790 before freight and delivery charges.

In the full-size sedan segment, it’s the Nissan Maxima (MSRP from $40,790) that grabbed the number two spot this year. Its quickly demonstrates its sporty character, highlighted by its 300-horsepower, 3.5-litre V6. We also like the quality finish of its cockpit, which makes a strong impression of the furnishings found in a luxury-branded vehicle.

In third place, we find the Buick LaCrosse (MSRP from $38,045) that impresses by its great ride comfort and the excellent sound insulation of its cockpit. We can choose between a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine that benefits from a mild hybrid system, or a smooth and refined 310-horsepower, 3.6-litre V6. An all-wheel drivetrain is also available to confront the winter season with greater assurance.
