Volkswagen develops 330-hp Golf race car
Volkswagen says it plans to evaluate a potential customer racing program for a newly-developed racing version of the Golf hatchback.
The customer privateer program could start as early as 2016, and see Volkswagen sell the 330-horsepower Golf race car to those interested in racing in sanctioned events.
The Golf race car's 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, derived from the Golf R, is mated to a six-speed DSG gearbox with shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel, and puts power down through the front wheels.
The car also features 18-inch racing rims, a chassis that is roughly 40 centimetres wider than that of the production Golf, and a massive rear wing and front splitter.
Volkswagen said its motorsport division is working with colleagues from sister brand SEAT, which has found great success with the Leon Cup Racer, to develop the Golf race car.
