Christmas Gift Ideas: How About a Winter Driving Course?

Canadian drivers know one thing for sure: they are the world’s best winter drivers. After all, we learned to drive on icy and snow-covered roads, so we have outstanding driving skills.

It would be nice if it were true, wouldn’t it? We aren’t complete dummies at winter driving, as they may be in some parts of the southern States, but there is still room for improvement.

While driving on Canadian roads requires only basic skills when the sky is blue and the road is clear, many drivers lose their confidence when conditions deteriorate or an emergency arises snow- or ice-covered surfaces. A lot of folks panic and don’t know what to do.

A one-day course at a driving school will help you respond appropriately when conditions turn ugly. You’ll also gain a better understanding of electronic driving aids.

Many schools offer winter driving courses, including CAA-Quebec (855-326-5322), which gives courses at selected schools in Montreal, Longueuil, Pointe-Claire and Brossard. Former racing driver Claude Bourbonnais (514-824-0263) has been running a winter driving school on Lac des Deux-Montagnes for a number of years.

Lastly, the Mécaglisse complex (819-424-3324) also offers winter driving courses, either in your own vehicle or in one belonging to the school. You’ll be driving on tracks or test facilities designed specifically for the purpose. A number of manufacturers, including Porsche (Camp4) and Mercedes-Benz also offer winter driving courses.

In short, you have a very wide choice, and the recipient will doubtless be delighted.
