Montreal Upset That Striking Cops Are Giving Less Tickets
The city of Montreal has filed a complaint with the police brotherhood in an attempt to recover alleged lost revenue as a result from pressure tactics from striking police officers. According the city, police officers have diminished the frequency with which they hand out tickets.
One estimate has that number as high as 3 million dollars. Montreal’s mayor Denis Coderre has indicated a reduction in revenue of 50% for the month of July alone.
Montreal Police fraternity president Yves Francoeur is furious with the city and says the move amounts to a declaration of war. He also says it's clear the city’s priority isn’t the security of its citizens because the ticket money is viewed as just another revenue stream.
If the city fails to recover the funds, the complaint will be heard by a tribunal from the Commission des relations du travail.
