Ferrari to Start Turboing Their Cars
According to a report by Motor Trend, Ferrari intends to feature turbocharged powerplants in the next generation of vehicles.
It won’t be the first time Ferrari has offered turboed vehicles however the last model to have one was the F40 with its 478-hp twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-8 in the late 80s.
Using turbo compressors with smaller engines will yield better fuel economy as the Italian automaker seeks to comply with stricter industry standards.
Purists will decry the move because Ferrari engines are known for their high revving naturally aspirated functionality. Turbo motors can have lag in reaching full power while the compressor spools up while naturally aspirated motors do not. Lag is less and less of an issue in modern turboed vehicles and fans will likely be content with the increase in power that motors like the 523 hp 3.8-liter V8 turbo Ferrari developed for the Maserati Quattroporte can deliver.
