BMW i3 Unveiled

BMW unveiled its brand new electric car today at three simultaneous events in New York, Beijing and London.

If you were watching the live feed of all three, the covers were pulled off at precisely the same moment at all three locations.

The BMW i3 ushers in the new i line of electric vehicles with the i8 supercar coming next year and other models yet to be revealed.

Designed from the ground up to be an electric car, the BMW i3 will have a hybrid-synchronous electric motor producing 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. It will use the industry’s first mass produced carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell mounted on an aluminum chassis.

"With this leading-edge vehicle and attractive price, we will provide customers with a compelling offer for electromobility," BMW sales and marketing chief Ian Robertson said in an earlier statement.

The i3 goes on sale in the second quarter of 2014 for $44,950 which is $3600 more than the US price.
