Austrian Grand Prix Likely to Return Next Year

Formula 1 and Red Bull have agreed to terms which will allow the Austrian Grand Prix to return in 2014. The news came after an announcement from Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz and F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone.

Red Bull owns the former A1 Ring circuit (now called Red Bull Ring) which held a Formula 1 race for 25 years spanning 1970-2003. In 2003 renovations were unable to be completed and the track was dropped from the F1 Circuit. After Red Bull’s acquisition in 2011 those renovations were finished and the track is fully operational.

No active F1 driver has won the Austrian GP which means if the race takes place there will be a new winner crowned.  Michael Schumacher is the current title holder, winning the last two events in 2002 and 2003. In the 2002 victory, Schumacher teammate Rubens Barrichello allowed him to pass on the last turn in order to win the race, causing a huge uproar from fans.

In 1975 a crashed claimed the life of American Mark Donohue, the 1972 Indianapolis 500 winner.
