GM Announces Fuel Efficiency Figures For Next-Generation Full-Size Trucks

GM has boasted that the eight-cylinder drivetrains found in its next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups will provide better fuel economy than cross-town rival Ford.  In fact, General Motors claims that the V8 full-size trucks will deliver 10.2 l/100 km on the highway, which trumps even the turbocharged EcoBoost V6 in the Ford F-150 (rated at 10.7 l/100 km).  City fuel mileage for the 5.3-liter motor in each pickup matches that of the F-150 EcoBoost (14.7 l/100 km).

An advantage of 0.5 l/100 km might not seem like much, but it's the first efficiency edge enjoyed by either Chevrolet or GMC in the pickup truck wars in quite some time.  From a power perspective, the 5.3-litre mill will produce 355 horses and 383 lb-ft of torque, which is down when compared against Ford and Ram when comparing similarly-priced engine options.  Despite the power gap, General Motors is hopeful that it can compete harder in luring loyal buyers away from the Blue Oval, which has dominated pickup sales for decades.
