Lincoln wants Mustang of their own

Ford's Mustang is an already impressive feat of engineering. Using a platform that stretches back to 2005, a big old American V8, and a solid axle rear end, its already capable of besting the best Bavaria can throw at it... for tens of thousands of dollar less. So what will happen when the next generation Mustang debuts with an innovative take on the MacPherson strut suspension out front and an independent rear axle out back? 

Well here's one thing that will happen: Lincoln will want it. Why? Well, because if the Mustang is already taking the fight to the BMW M3, Lincoln would like a chance to take it to the rest of the BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Infiniti and Cadillac lines with a rear-wheel drive platform of their own. Rumoured to already be asking for access to the next-gen platform, Car and Driver is quick to point out that just such a platform might help the MKZ look more like a youthful performance sedan than its new grille allows, as well as make the MKS more than simply a top-tier Taurus. And although logic would seem to dictate that spreading the new platform's development costs around the Ford family would make the most sense, when it comes to either Lincoln or the Mustang, Ford's already proven that all bets are off. But hope, as they say, springs eternal.
