Ford drops EcoBoost into Explorer, calls it the Sport
If you've ever had the lucky happenstance to drive Ford's latest iteration of the exalter Explorer nameplate, than you have probably reached two conclusions: first, that it's a very nicely appointed crossover, and second, that it desperately needs the EcoBoost V6 under the hood. Although the naturally aspirated six-lunger isn't exactly slouch-worthy, the big Explorer's considerable mass and confidence inspiring chassis are just begging for the application of a bit more power. So it makes sense then that Ford should opt to install their award-winning twin-turbo V6 in the Explorer. But instead of pairing the new engine with an uber-luxury Platinum package that would muscle in on Lincoln's turf, Ford's gone the opposite route and created the Explorer Sport.
With blacked out wheels, headlights, and mirrors, the new SUV-cum-crossover looks particularly sporting, but also features a few key changes to the vehicle's underpinnings to ensure that it makes the most of the 350 horsepower provided by the EcoBoost V6. Those include additional chassis reinforcement, a slightly quicker steering ratio, bigger brakes and a different final drive ratio. As a result, the new vehicle gets a 5,000 pound tow rating and what is sure to be a significantly more sporting attitude and feel.
