McLaren Releases Revisions to MP4-12

When Toyota, Ford, GM or some other major manufacturer learns of an issue with one of their vehicles, the response can be a long time in coming. Thousands of people have to get involved, hundreds of thousands (or millions) of dollars need to be spent, and that’s only the beginning.

But when you’re McLaren, things are a little different. After all, you probably have a bit more experience responding to drivers’ needs when your drivers compete in the ultimate iteration of motorsport. So, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprising that, unlike some other manufacturers, McLaren has listened to the feedback of everyone from potential customers to automotive journalists in the development of their MP4-12 supercar. Apparently calling the resulting automobile the MP4-12C, the new car benefits from improved steering feel, a lighter shift throw, and an increased amount of engine noise extending into the cabin.

Although obviously removed from the manufacturing processes of the standard commuter car, the changes represent an obvious shift in automakers’ attitudes. Using today’s varied communications devices in order to gain feedback, automakers are increasingly listening to criticism of their products, and one can expect such a trend to  eventually trickle down to their local Honda or Toyota dealer.
