Volkswagen Sets New One-Tank Distance Record
Although most of us would be happy to see the high side of 600 kilometers out of a single tank of gas, Volkswagen’s diesel-powered sedans consistently turn in mileage figures that allow ranges of 1,000 kilometres and beyond. Using efficient motors, fuel delivery systems, and transmissions, the latest crop of TDI vehicles have impressed many would-be hybrid buyers, offering stellar fuel economy that most recently allowed a team from London’s Sunday Times to traverse a whopping 2,456.9 kilometers on a single tank of gas.
A new world record, the amazing feat was completed using a stock Passat Bluemotion. Fitted with aerodynamic modifications to the bodywork, a lower ride height, Stop/Start technology, programmed battery charging, longer gearing and low rolling resistance tires, the Passat Bluemotion averaged 89.93 mpg, or just 2.6 litres per hundred kilometers. Following French autoroutes with some stops in towns, the team maintained a speed of just over 45 miles per hour to minimize fuel consumption, and was tailed by a team from AA in order to verify the feat.
