Ram Confirms Dakota Name for Upcoming Midsize Pickup
Ram’s new midsize pickup for the North American market will arrive in 2027, as announced in September by Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa. And now we know for sure it will be called Dakota.
Indeed, Ram boss Tim Kuniskis took advantage of a media event in Michigan this week—which The Car Guide attended—to confirm the return of the popular nameplate abandoned in 2011.

“Yeah, it will be called the Dakota. It's a no brainer. Why wouldn't you call it a Dakota?" Kuniskis told the crowd.
The debut date is still unknown. However, we can tell you that the new Dakota will have a body-on-frame construction, offer several powertrain options (possibly including a hybrid) and roll off the line in Toledo, Ohio, alongside the Jeep Gladiator. It will likely launch as a 2028 model.

The midsize truck will not only fill a gap in Ram's lineup, but it will also attract buyers who find the full-size Ram 1500 too expensive, especially since the discontinuation of the Ram 1500 Classic. Kuniskis talked about a base price of around US$40,000, but it will be higher than that in Canada, obviously.
In the shorter term, Ram continues its onslaught of 25 product announcements over 18 months. The return of the HEMI V8 in the 2026 Ram 1500 is working so well that supply can't keep up with demand.
Furthermore, the company is preparing to introduce another new model on January 1. Based on the teaser that was posted online, we can expect the new Ram 1500 TRX. Keep following The Car Guide so you don't miss anything.
