2027 Chevrolet Silverado Previewed in Patent Drawings
A new generation of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is on the way to replace the one that debuted for the 2019 model year. Prototypes have been undergoing road testing for several months already, but remain camouflaged in all the pictures circulating online.
Last week, however, General Motors filed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), as discovered by Car and Driver, and it included a series of drawings revealing the exterior of the redesigned full-size pickup.

At the front, the grille is redesigned but seemingly just as imposing. The Chevrolet logo sits on a crossbar that connects the headlights, the latter adopting a completely new look that’s reminiscent of the Tahoe’s or Silverado HD’s.

Noticeably, the silhouette, including the bumpers, is boxier than ever. The hood also appears taller and flatter, which isn't good news for pedestrian safety. At the same time, it incorporates two large bulges hinting at the powerful engine beneath (more on that later).
The fenders are more muscular including more angular wheel arches. At the rear, the taillights stretch forward as if to mimic those of the Silverado EV. Unsurprisingly, corner steps continue to be integrated into the bumper to facilitate access to the cargo bed.

There are no drawings of the interior, but expect a redesigned dashboard with an even larger digital interface, possibly like the 33-inch unit in some Cadillac models.
As for the engines, both the turbocharged four-cylinder and the six-cylinder diesel could be back, although the fate of the latter is less certain. What we do know is that General Motors is working on a new generation of V8 engines—the sixth—mainly for full-size pickups and SUVs. After announcing an investment of $854 million USD in January 2023, the automaker committed another $888 million USD in May to boost production.
The new V8 units, expected from 2027, promise more power and fuel economy. Currently, the 5.3-litre block delivers 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, while the 6.2-litre engine develops 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. A supercharged variant of the latter powers models such as the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing and Escalade-V (up to 682 hp).

When it comes to reducing fuel consumption (and emissions), GM said that “new combustion and thermal management innovations will be a key factor driving these improvements,” without being more specific. Could these upcoming V8s be electrified, let’s say with a mild hybrid system? Only time will tell.
The debut of the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra is planned for sometime in 2026. Keep following The Car Guide so you don't miss anything.
