VinFast VF 8 Recalled Over Possible Loss of Vehicle Control

A safety recall aimed at preventing a loss of vehicle control has just been added to the growing list of quality and electronic issues affecting the VinFast VF 8 since its launch on the Canadian market.

According to the recall notice posted by Transport Canada, the lane keeping assist (LKA) feature of the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) may not work properly under certain conditions. For example, the steering wheel could move unexpectedly or the steering wheel movements may be difficult to override.

Assuming the driver does not regain control in a timely manner, this type of problem could naturally increase the risk of an accident.

VinFast reminds that LKA is only an ADAS feature, and that the driver must pay attention and be ready to take control at all times when the feature is engaged,” the notice said.

The company will recall just over 3,000 VF 8 crossovers covering the 2023-2025 model years in Canada, with the fix being a software update to the ADAS. This cannot be done via the cloud, so owners will have to make an appointment at a VinFast service centre.

The latest recall is the fourth affecting the VF 8. Two others involve airbags and a third has to do with a software issue that may cause the vehicle to inadvertently shift into neutral while driving.

Meanwhile, some owners have reported that their VF 8 occasionally stops working for no apparent reason. In fact, during CAA-Quebec’s EV test drives at the Montreal Auto Show earlier this year, units would sometimes come to an unexpected stop in the middle of the road, leaving drivers stranded.

VinFast may have a 10-year/200,000km warranty, but leasing is definitely the smarter way to go, here. Or just avoid VinFast completely.
