Shortage of Mazda CX-50 Units Still Not Dire Following Import Halt

Here’s an interesting observation we made when looking at Mazda Canada’s July sales, which are up 6.4 percent year-on-year: the CX-50 is still doing relatively well for a vehicle whose imports into the country have been suspended indefinitely since May 12 due to the new counter-tariffs.

Remember, it’s the only Mazda vehicle assembled in the United States, more specifically in Alabama at a factory that also manufactures the Toyota Corolla Cross.

The company used to sell an average of about 1,200 units per month through April. That number dropped to 907 in May and 650 in June before rising to 662 in July. Who would have thought?

Since the beginning of 2025, Canadian sales of the CX-50 have reached 6,920 units, an increase of 20.9 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

Clearly, Mazda dealerships from coast to coast did a good job of stocking up on inventory before imports stopped. Incidentally, those vehicles and the ones that are still sitting on dealer lots are exempt from counter-tariffs and therefore sold at the same prices.

A quick online search reveals that the CX-50 shortage is not yet critical. Some dealers still have a dozen units or more left, although many others are down to just one or two.

Of course, if you're interested in purchasing a CX-50, it's best not to waste any more time. We highly recommend the CX-50 Hybrid, which boasts exceptional fuel efficiency (6.2 L/100 km combined) and a driving experience that surpasses that of a Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V.

Another thing you should know is that Mazda Canada has offset dwindling CX-50 inventory by importing more vehicles from Japan (CX-70 and CX-90, in particular) and Mexico (Mazda3 and CX-30). In fact, their July sales were up by a good margin. The 1,791 Mazda3 cars sold in Canada last month represent a whopping increase of 126.7 percent from a year ago.
