Fuel Pump in Thousands of Ford Vehicles Could Fail, Prompting Another Recall

Ford, which has already recalled more vehicles in 2025 than in all of 2024, is warning owners of more than 850,000 Ford and Lincoln vehicles from the 2021-2023 model years in the U.S. that their low-pressure fuel pump could fail. The number of units to be recalled in Canada is 107,534.

More specifically, affected models include the 2021-2023 Ford Bronco, Explorer, F-150, Super Duty and Lincoln Aviator, the 2022 Ford Expedition, as well as the 2021-2022 Ford Mustang and Lincoln Navigator.

According to a document submitted by Ford to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), contamination in the low-pressure fuel pump orifices could lead to a loss of flow and pressure, increasing the "sensitivity to vapor lock." As a result, the engine may suffer from reduced power or poor performance, including misfiring or rough running, and eventually stall.

Ford reportedly discovered the problem back in September 2022 during an investigation resulting from an increase in warranty claims. These claims largely decreased after the supplier of the fuel pump instituted several corrective measures to prevent contamination.

The investigation was closed in July 2023, except that a year later, the NHTSA itself turned its attention to the problem after receiving a number of complaints from Bronco owners saying they were experiencing power loss with their engines. It seems that high humidity and heat are conducive to the formation of contamination.

Ford does not yet have a fix, unfortunately, but is working on it. Will dealers simply replace the fuel pump or will they perform other repairs? That remains to be seen. Customers can expect to receive a recall notice in the next few weeks.
