Lexus Stop Sale of GX460, Evaluating Stability Control

After Consumer Reports found the latest GX460 at fault for egregious amounts of lifting throttle oversteer, Toyota has put a stop sale order on the mid-level Lexus. Precluding CR‘s own “Do Not Buy” recommendation (the first of the decade), the decision comes after a video demonstrating the problem seemed to show little to no stability control intervention. While that’s bad enough, the problem is even worse: the GX460 in question is based upon the same platform that underpins the FJ Cruiser, 4Runner, and Tacoma.

Not surprisingly, Lexus and Toyota have stepped up to the plate and are currently re-evaluating their stability control programs in an effort to mitigate another throttle-gate. While the 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, and Tacoma have not demonstrated the same problem as the Lexus, you can believe that all vehicles in question are being extensively tested by both Toyota and outside sources.
