2015-2021 Ford Super Duty Fuel Leaks Under Investigation in the U.S.

U.S. authorities are looking into fuel leaks that can result in a fire on some 2015-2021 Ford Super Duty pickups.

More specifically, affected models include F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks equipped with the 6.7-litre Power Stroke turbo-diesel engine.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said its Office of Defects Investigation has opened a preliminary evaluation after receiving 27 complaints from owners across the U.S. including 12 reports of fires and a total of four injuries.

The problem appears to come from a fracture in the secondary fuel filter. The proximity of the filter to high heat sources creates a potential for auto-ignition thermal events and fires.

The filter’s manufacturer told the NHTSA the filter is tested to operate at reduced levels of pressure during the manufacturing process, compared with the possible maximum operating pressure in the fuel system of the truck. That doesn’t sound like the proper way to do things, does it?

Ford is working with the NHTSA to support its investigation in order to determine whether the vehicles pose an unreasonable safety risk. It seems to be pretty obvious, but we’ll let the experts decide. Look for a recall to be announced later this year not only in the U.S. but in Canada, too.
